Thank you for purchasing our OVERDRIVE-CD CDROM unit. Please read the
instructions in this manual thoroughly before installing or using the
OVERDRIVE-CD unit. Refer to the CDROM drive Installation Manual also
included in the OVERDRIVE-CD package for a physical description of the
CDROM drive and usage precautions.
1 - INSTALLATION
1.1 - Hardware Installation
Make sure that your computer is powered off before attempting to install
the OVERDRIVE-CD unit.
There are four cables which need be connected to the OVERDRIVE. All
connections of the OVERDRIVE unit are made to the rear panel.
1 - PCMCIA DATA cable: plug the 25-PIN connector into the OVERDRIVE port
labelled 'PCMCIA DATA' on the rear panel and screw the two lateral knobs
of the DB25 connector to fasten the cable to the drive. The PCMCIA
controller at the other end of the cable fits into the PCMCIA port on the
left side of your Amiga 1200. The FLAT SIDE of the controller casing
MUST BE TURNED UPWARDS.
2 - AMIGA-TO-OVERDRIVE SOUND CABLE: this is a standard stereo sound
cable with RCA jacks. Plug the two RCA jacks at one end of the cable into
the sound outlets 'R.AUDIO' and 'L.AUDIO' on the rear panel of your A1200
and plug the RCA jacks at the other end into the corresponding two lower
RCA plugs, labelled 'AUDIO IN' on the rear panel of the OVERDRIVE.
3 - AMIGA-TO-MONITOR SOUND CABLE: connect the sound cable of you
monitor to the the two upper RCA connectors labelled 'AUDIO OUT' on the
rear panel of the OVERDRIVE.
4 - POWER-SUPPLY ADAPTOR: finally plug the power supply block adaptor
into the wall outlet and fit the power jack into the '12V' inlet in the
rear panel of the OVERDRIVE.
Check all the connections and power on your A1200 which should boot up
in the usual way.
1.2 - Software Installation
The procedure used to install the OVERDRIVE-CD software on your A1200
depends on whether your system has a hard disk or only a floppy disk
drive. Be sure to follow the instructions appropriate for your system:
If your system has no hard disk, no installation of the software is
necessary. The installation diskette 'OVERCD' is basically a standard
'Workbench 3.0' which contains everything for the OVERDRIVE CD to operate
directly from it. Simply, insert the diskette in drive DF0: and boot up
your system in the usual way.
If your system has a hard disk, insert the installation diskette into
the floppy drive and open the drawer 'Install'. Simply click on the icon
'Install' inside this drawer, this will set up everything needed to make
the CD32 emulation work into S:, C:, LIBS:, L: and DEVS:.
You may want to undo this operation, to do so, double click on the icon
'Restore'.
Finally, you must also install yourself two important utilities, 'CDDA',
to play digital-audio CD's and, 'Carrousel', to view Kodak Photo-CD's
into the directories of your choice on your hard drive (if any). These
two utilities are located in directory 'CDROM' of the installation disk.
2 - OPERATION
The CDROM drive, CD0:, is used exactly in the same way as a floppy
drive. A CD can just be considered as a very big and fast write-protected
diskette.
Technically, the installation procedure installs two different 'CD0'
mounlists, one directly into 'sys:storage' and the other in
'sys:storage/DosDrivers'. The latter is the standard mountlist for
ordinary use of the CDROM drive, it mounts the 'cd.device' and associated
CDROM filesystem. The CDROM drive, CD0:, can subsequently be used exactly
in the same way as a floppy drive. The former mountlist is exclusively
for use with CD32 games, it installs system patches required for games
only. This mountlist should be solely used for this purpose.
2.1 - Running CD32 Games under Workbench 3.0
'Workbench 3.0' is the current version of the operating system on all
Amiga 1200 machines. The software of the OVERDRIVE-CD emulates most of
the new features of 'Workbench 3.1' which is the new release of the
operating system dedicated to the CD32.
In order to launch most CD32 games, the system need be restarted anew
and dedicated software emulation features be turned on. The switches to
activate these features are included in the mountlist 'sys:storage/CD0'.
Press simultaneously the 'CTRL', 'LEFT-A' and 'RIGHT-A' keys to reboot
the A1200 as usual. While the system is booting up, keep the LEFT-MOUSE
BUTTON pressed until the 'CD32 Boot Requester' is displayed. Then, select
the 'CDROM Boot' option to boot from the CDROM drive.
The OVERDRIVE-CD software automatically recognizes the game controller
plugged into JOYPORT 2 of your A1200. Practically, you need at least a
standard joystick to play CD32 games; the other buttons on the CD32
controller are emulated from the keyboard.
The standard key settings are as follows :
. FORWARD and REVERSE buttons replaced by RIGHT and LEFT arrows,
. GREEN button replaced by F1 (key code = 80),
. YELLOW button replaced by F2 (key code = 81),
. BLUE button replaced by F3 (key code = 82).
. PLAY button replaced by F4 (key code = 83).
The following settings are optional if a Joystick is plugged in port
JOYPORT 2 :
. UP button replaced by '8' (key code = 62)
. DOWN button replaced by '2' (key code = 30)
. LEFT button replaced by '4' (key code = 45)
. RIGHT button replaced by '6' (key code = 47)
. RED or FIRE button replaced by ENTER (key code = 67)
Other settings can be chosen by editing the mountlist 'sys:storage/CD0'.
Modify the last line in the mounlist with the entry 'Startup'. To each
key is assigned a keyboard code in DECIMAL notation. The keyboard matrix
of key codes is given in Figure 1 of Appendix 1. The key codes in this
figure are in hexadecimal form, you must therefore use the correspondance
table in Appendix 1 to convert hexadecimal numbers into decimal numbers.
Should you need to modify the mounlist, make sure to first save the
original mountlist.
2.2 - Running CD32 Games under Workbench 3.1
The OVERDRIVE-CD software emulates most of the new functions of the
operating system added for the CD32. A few games howewer will only run
under Version 3.1 of the operating system which is currently installed
in the ROM of all CD32 machines. A version of 'Workbench 3.1' for the
Amiga 1200 is available from Commodore. In order to use Version 3.1 of
the operating system, a memory expansion is required to load the ROM
image in FAST memory. Run a small utility program called 'rekick' to
install the ROM image in memory (the 'kickstart' file loaded by 'rekick'
must be located into directory 'DEVS:').
The system need be rebooted from the new ROM image installed by
'rekick'. You will therefore have to operate in two steps as follows:
1 - Restart your A1200 as usual. While the system is booting up,
keep the LEFT-MOUSE BUTTON pressed until the 'CD32 Boot Requester' is
displayed. Then, select the 'Rekick 3.1' option in the center of the
requester to force 'rekick' to install 'Workbench 3.1' in memory. The
machine will be rebooted automatically after 3 seconds.
2 - Keep the LEFT-MOUSE BUTTON pressed until the 'CD32 Boot Requester'
appears anew. Now, clik on the 'CDROM boot' gadget to launch the game.
Depending on the version of your Amiga you may not have to 'rekick' each
time the machine is rebooted.
2.3 - Running CDTV Titles
Unfortunately, many CDTV titles will run neither on CD32 nor on A1200
machines simply because their software is not compatible with Version 3.0
of the operating system.
For the titles that are compatible with Workbench 3.0/3.1 you may need
two additional libraries specific to CDTV, i.e. 'playersprefs.library' and
'debox.library'. Install these two libraries in directory 'LIBS:' of your
system disk.
2.4 - Ordinary CDROM usage
If the LEFT-MOUSE BUTTON is not kept pressed down during startup, the
standard 'startup-sequence' will be executed. The CDROM drive will be
mounted according to the standard procedure if the icon 'CD0' is present
into 'DEVS:DosDrivers': you may have to transfer the icon 'CD0' from the
directory 'SYS:Storage/DosDrivers' into 'DEVS:DosDrivers'.
3 - PLAYING CD-DA's (Compact Disk - Digital Audio)
'CDDA' is a utility program to play CD-DA compact disks or hybrid
CDROM's which have both data and audio tracks. Double-click on the
'CDDA' icon to run the program.
If no compact disk with audio tracks is inserted, nothing will
happen. Howewer, if a Compact Disk including Digital Audio tracks is
inserted into the OVERDRIVE-CD drive, an extra icon representing a Compact
Disk is displayed into the Workbench screen.
If the CD contains only Digital Audio tracks (CD-DA), this icon solely
appears.
If the CD contains both CDROM and CD-DA data, two icons are displayed:
the CD-DA icon as above and the standard Workbench disk icon with the name
of the CD inserted. The OVERDRIVE-CD allows Digital Audio tracks to be
played on CDROMs contrarily to the CD32 which only support pure CD-DA's.
In order to play the audio tracks on the compact disk, double-click on
this icon. The control panel of the CDDA player will be displayed. Use
the mouse to control the CDDA player from the buttons of the control panel
as follows :
- TRACK DISPLAY PANEL : select or unselect the tracks to be played with
the mouse. Selected tracks will appear highlighted.
- TOGGLE PLAY/PAUSE BUTTON : right single arrow '>' to start playing,
'||' to place the CD in pause mode.
- STOP BUTTON : square icon on the right. Stop playing, restore track
selection.
- CYCLE BUUTON : bottom right. Repeat endlessly track selection.
- RANDOM SELECTION BUTTON : '321'. Randomly reshuffle the track
display. To restore the initial order of tracks, click on STOP BUTTON.
- FAST FORWARD BUTTON : '>>'. Click once briefly to move to start of
next track in selection or keep button pressed down to move in fast
forward mode (double speed, audible). Otherwise, if you hold the
button down, the CD drive will start playing forward at double speed
in an audible manner as long as you keep the button pressed.
- FAST BACKWARD BUTTON : '<<'. Click once briefly to move to start of
previous track in selection or hold button down to move in fast forward
mode (double speed, audible). Otherwise, if you hold the button down,
the CD drive will start playing backward at double speed in an mute
manner as long as you keep the button pressed.
- SAMPLING BUTTON : '10 10 10 10'. Play 10 seconds of each track in
selection when highlighted.
- CLOCK DISPLAY : display time according to the time mode selected.
- TIME MODE SLIDER : determines the time information displayed by the
clock above. 4 modes from left to right:
. '|--> |', Ellapsed time from start of CD,
. '| |-> |', Ellapsed time from start of current track (default
mode),
. '| >-| |', Time left to end of current track,
. '| >--|', Time left to end of CD.
- QUIT GADGET : standard quit gadget on the left of screen bar.
- SLEEP GADGET : 'Z z' on the right of screen bar. Removes the CDDA
display panel but the program remains active. Click again on the 'CDDA'
icon on the Workbench screen to display again the control panel.
4 - PHOTO-CD CARROUSEL
'Carrousel' is a utility program to view photographs recorded on CDROM
commonly referred to as 'PHOTO-CD'.
Double-click on the 'Carrousel' icon to run the program. The control
panel will appear at the bottom of the program screen.
If a PhotoCD is inserted, the carrousel of thumbnail photographs will be
displayed, each thumbnail photo being a miniature of the full-screen photo
recorded on the Photo-CD in the drive.
4.1 - Selecting photos
35 thumbnail photos are displayed on the screen. There might be more
photos on the Photo-CD which you can review just by moving the mouse
beyond the screen limits, to the right (forward) or to the left
(backward) in order to make the carrousel spin.
You may select a number of photos just by moving the mouse while holding
down the left mouse button. Multiple selections are authorized.
Conversely, you may unselect photos exactly in the same way.
You may also select all the photos in one go by clicking on "Select All"
and unselect them all by clicking on "Unselect All".
The photos will be viewed according to their order of selection.
4.2 - Viewing photos
In order to view the photos selected, click on button "View".
The photos in the selection will be displayed in turn.
Each photo will remain on screen for the number of seconds displayed by
the 'Pause' slider. Of course, the time of display can be ajusted by
moving the slider with the mouse, The lower limit of the slider
corresponds to the minimum time required to convert one phto from the
special Photo-CD format into IFF Amiga format.
The selection will be displayed only once if the 'Loop' selection box is
not tagged (default) or will repeat endlessly if the 'Loop' box is tagged.
The display process can be interrupted at any time by cliking into the
display screen or pressing the 'Esc' key.
The default display resolution is 768 x 256 pixels which corresponds to
the "No Interlace" setting. If you set the toggle button 'Interlace/No
Interlace' to 'Interlace', The display resolution will be set to 768 x 512
pixels, i.e. twice the default resolution and the display will be set
to Interlace mode. The photos will take almost twice as long to appear
with the shortest pause.
The last image displayed stays in the display buffer can be viewed
at any time by clicking on 'View Buffer'. Click anywhere in the display
screen to bring back the control panel.
4.3 - Saving photos
Finally, you may choose to convert Photo-CD files into standard
'256-color', 'HAM 8' or '24-bit' Amiga IFF files. To do so, make a
selection of photos as described above, use the toggle buttons
'Interlace/No Interlace' and '256-colour/HAM8/24-Bit' to set the format of
the images to be saved.
To start saving photos, click on the 'Save' button. A requester with
three choices is then displayed :
- 'Selection' : press this button the save the selection into the
directory of your choice (the file requester will appear for you to select
this directory). The images will have the same name as on the Photo-CD in
the form 'imgXXXX.256, imgXXXX.ham8 or imgXXX.24b where XXXX is their
number on the CD.
- 'Buffer' : save the buffer to a file (the file requester will appear
for you to select the file name).
- 'Cancel' : quit the requester.
